What We're About
We have a problem
I welcome you to our page, and maybe eventually to our Committee. If you are
reading this, then you are probably aware of the current state of our mental
health system in Ontario. The numbers of mentally ill are rising, while the
numbers of qualified professionals are falling. I realize that diagnosis is
far superior to what it was in the past; but not enough to account for the huge
increase in anxiety, mood, and behavioural disorders.
We have divided persons with mental health disabilities into two (2) logical
groups:
- (1) birth - 18 years
- (2) 19 years +
Group 1
Group (1) was isolated because the onset of mental illness occurs predominately
in this age range. 20% within this group experience a mental health problem
or problems. This is a staggering statistic; which points to early detection
and intervention as an absolute necessity. Toward this end, we recommend:
- Mandatory training in mental health issues as part of the ongoing certification
of all teachers.
- Increased funding for www.kidsmentalhealth.ca to both raise its profile
and to increase its content.
Group 2
Group (2) comprises those with late-onset mental health problems, and those
who escaped early detection and intervention. For this group, employment, if
at all possible, is the desired outcome. Failing that, independent living offers
the most dignity. This group requires that:
- A marketing campaign be funded to stress the positive aspects of hiring
a person with a disability (including a mental disability).
- A peer support 'buddy' system be funded to assist with the transition
of persons with a mental disability to an independent living situation.
